To test your backup sump pump, simply unplug your main sump pump and let the sump well fill until the backup operates. Be sure to plug your main sump pump when you are done.
It is also a good idea to take a look at your water discharge line outside. Be sure the cold winter did not damage the discharge line and that the water is being carried away from your home.
Spending a few moments checking your sump pump will reduce the chance of a basement flood.
